Stanley Kubrick has only made a handfull of movies in his long career but most have become cinematic classics, sooner or later. He had taken a decade hiatus between his previous directorial efford "the Shinning" and the same length of time again for his final movie "Eyes Wide Shut". His movies are usually cold, thought provoking, slow burning marvels, but always worth the wait.
In the mid 80s Kubrick tackles the Vietnam war. His approach is, in contrast with Oliver Stones Platoon & Coppola's Apocalypse Now is unique. It split between boot camp & the Nam. It follows its protagonist Joker from a hellish boot camp with the funny yet cruel drill instructer. The second half is the "in the Nam" half. It has amazing battle scenes, snipper attacks, and examples of culture clashes between "the Gooks" and "the Jolly Green Giant" American troops. It does not provide any answers but it poses the question. The question.... well I'm not sure what the question is, but that's Kubrick... makes you think though! |
